The ELA technology standard I chose was LAFS.2.L.3.4. This standards main focus is being able to clarify meanings of unknown words through the sentences context, the words prefixes, root word, and being able to use dictionaries and glossaries. I think I could implement this standard based on my own skill set. I have worked with children for years and even was a TA in a kindergarten classroom during all of my senior year, so I am very used to children always asking me what something meant. When they would ask me I would try and use a strategy already listen such as, asking them what the the word meant alone, then with the prefix, and then just put those definitions together.

The tool that I selected from CPALMS toolkit was for second grade science, Rock Elements, Inc. MEA. This is a lesson plan in which children work together to decide which type of would be best used for a rock garden. In this lesson, only one type of rock can be used and it is based off given data so all the children have to work together, problem solve, and interpret results from a data set. I would use this lesson plan in my classroom because I think it is a good way for children to just interact with others and be able to communicate what they are seeing/finding. Also It will teach them very valuable skills that will later be added to such as learning how to read a data set and interpret those findings.

Internet searching is simply when one has a question and they it into a search engine, mostly in hopes to find a quick and easy answer. As a teacher, it is very important to be proficient in internet searching because a lot of the time you need to be able to find an answer or resource fast. Being a teacher you are always open to questions and you might get asked something you are not to familiar on, so being proficient in internet search will help aid you in being able to teach your students more. The skill I think I will use most moving forward is omitting certain words from the phrase you are searching, to do this you simply use a type in your phrase and add a dash (-) and the word/ words you want to prevent from influencing the search.

  1. Hey Danyel! It is so cool that you were a TA in a kindergarten classroom. I'm sure that gave you a lot of experience. I also love how you were very eager to have your students learn by asking them what the word meant alone, then adding the prefix. It is so important to not give children the answers right away but rather encourage them to solve it by themselves :)

  2. I totally agree with you on why searching internet is an important skill for teachers. Looking for an answer to unfamiliar topics can take a long time; however, that process will be much faster if teachers know tips to google things fast and accurately.

  3. Hey Danyel! Great blog post! I liked the standard that you picked! The exact meaning of words and the breakdown of them is something that I've always seen as super valuable and interesting, and it is a valuable skill for educators to have. Case in point, you have effectively used it in a classroom environment! Its really cool that you have used the standard already in practice!
I really like the rock garden assignment! It develops a variety of important skills in a fun way. A part of me would also just enjoy watching second graders argue over rocks.
You and I both said the same thing about search proficiency. We need to be able to get information quickly. We can answer questions in an instant if we know how to search properly!
